Portland, Oregon based riff masters Red Fang released their third full-length album ‘Whales And Leeches’ this year via Relapse Records. Throughout the eight years of their existence, they’ve worked tremendously hard and undergone a steady buildup to get to the stature they’ve attained in the year 2013, with the success of this new album and numerous typically crushing live performances around the world. Aside from Orion Landau’s breathtaking artwork that blows you away as soon as you pick up the album and look at its cover, ‘Whales And Leeches’ has plenty of positive aspects to it which justifies all the attention and acclaim it has garnered this year. While staying within the envelope of the kind of stoner hard rock style they’ve been known for, Red Fang has come up with some truly creative and compelling guitar work to decorate this 41-minute riff bonanza, to go with a tasty rhythm section, and the vocals match the strength of the music. Producer Chris Funk finds the perfect middle ground between justifiably highlighting every individual element of the music and capturing the raw, dirty stoner rock vibe. Whales And Leeches presents Red Fang at the peak of their creative powers, and tunes like ‘DOEN’, ‘Blood Like Cream’, ‘No Hope’, ‘Behind The Light’ and ‘1516’ are just 5 of 11 reasons why it’s is a must-have for any fan of heavy music.
