‘Top 50 Albums Of 2013’ Countdown – #39: Nekrofilth – Devil’s Breath

By Andrew Bansal

Cleveland, Ohio-based death/thrash crossover punk outfit Nekrofilth features Nunslaughter guitarist Zack Rose on guitar and vocals, and began their journey as a band in 2008. A few demo, split, live and EP releases later, they finally came out with their full-length debut album “Devil’s Breath” via Hells Headbangers Records this year. It took a long time coming but has certainly turned out to be worth the wait, both for the band and their fans. A devastating slab of ear-splitting extreme metal with a prominent punk crossover, Devil’s Breath delivers on all fronts and boasts of some offensively filthy lyrics that go perfectly hand in hand with the music. ‘Top 50 Albums Of 2013’ Countdown – #41: Czar – No One Is Alone If No One Is Alive

By Andrew Bansal

As a follow-up to their hugely impressive debut LP ‘Vertical Mass Grave’, Chicago-based trio Czar came out with their sophomore full-length effort titled ‘No One Is Alone If No One Is Alive’, via Cracknation Records this year. As the album’s title and cover artwork aptly suggests, their delivery of heavy, sludgy riffs through clean guitar tones is enveloped within an extremely downcast, depressing atmosphere and hence the primary strength of this album is the sheer strength of the expression its attempting to portray. ‘Top 50 Albums Of 2013’ Countdown – #42: Djinn And Miskatonic – Forever In The Realm

By Andrew Bansal

Having started out in 2011 and now an integral part of Bangalore, India’s rapidly thriving doom metal scene. Djinn And Miskatonic released their debut full-length album ‘Forever In The Realm’ via Transcending Obscurity India earlier this year, a stellar debut in every sense. Following in the footsteps of fellow Bangalore doom-mongers Bevar Sea who themselves released a fantastic debut album last year, Djinn And Miskatonic’s five-song, 43-minute effort is a nod to classic doom metal and satiates fans of the genre but at the same time consists of elements that give the band its own identity amidst the copious number of doom bands in existence today, not only in Bangalore but around the world as well. They began under the Wolvserpent name in 2010 and three years after the debut full-length ‘Blood Seed’, they came out with the second LP this year via Relapse Records, titled Perigaea Antahkarana. ‘Top 50 Albums Of 2013’ Countdown – #44: Church Of Misery – Thy Kingdom Scum

By Andrew Bansal

After a gap of four years since the release of their previous album ‘Houses Of The Unholy’, Japanese doom metal band Church Of Misery came out with their fifth studio full-length effort ‘Thy Kingdom Scum’ on June 11th via Metal Blade/Rise Above Records. Paying homage to classic Black Sabbath under the guise of tunes based on serial killers and mass murderers, this album is quintessential stoner doom rock with massive heavy riffs and sweet solos played out of crisp-sounding guitars, a dirty low-end on the bass, drumming that’s reminiscent of Bill Ward’s early years in Sabbath, and gruff vocals that blend well into the music.
