Northern California deathgrind/thrash outfit Ghoul and Richmond, Virginia based marijuana-themed death metal band Cannabis Corpse have combined forces to record the ‘Splatterhash’ split EP, which is set for release via Tankcrimes Records as 12″ vinyl, CD and digital download next Tuesday January 7th 2014. Members of both bands have been highly active in recent times with various musical projects, and they’ve ridden the creative wave to write new songs for this EP which comes as a pleasant bonus for their fans. The Splatterhash split combines two vastly varying styles of extreme metal and gives listeners a short, sharp 12-minute burst of face-melting brutality.
The 4-track EP starts off with two Cannabis Corpse tunes which deliver exactly what one would expect from the band, well-crafted death metal encapsulated in songs with hilarious titles like ‘The Inhalation Plague’ and ‘Shatter Their Bongs’. Land Phil lays down some sick bass lines and guitar riffs while doing an excellent job on vocals, and is well assisted by HellHammer on drums and Brent Legion on guitars. Cannabis Corpse have served up a delicious two-song treat here and it’s hard to imagine any death metal fan disliking it.
The EP shifts into top gear with the two Ghoul songs ‘Inner Sanctum’ and ‘Spill Your Guts’, and just like Cannabis Corpse, Ghoul has also done their reputation no harm whatsoever with the new compositions on this split, and it’s impossible to find anything to criticize in these tunes. While the Cannabis Corpse songs cater to the head-bangers, the Ghoul portion of the EP gets the mosh pit going with ‘Inner Sanctum’ and quite fittingly, throws the knockout punch with ‘Spill Your Guts’.
Musically, Splatterhash comes across as a precisely composed slab of extreme metal that is able to convey its musical expression even within such a short duration. Besides, the cover artwork makes the physical formats a wiser choice for the buyer. This is by all means an enjoyable little offering from Cannabis Corpse and Ghoul to start the new year.
