Seeing Scottish pirate metal band Alestorm live is one of the most fun-filled experiences you’ll ever get at a metal concert. The best thing about them is, even though their music is themed on pirates and drinking, there is so real visual “gimmick” to it. They do not dress up as pirates, and in the end, their show is all about the music. They have released three studio albums till date, but I actually saw them live before hearing any of their music. It was at the Eluveitie show in late 2009 at the now extinct Ultra Violet Social Club in Los Angeles, and I was instantly blown away. After that, I sought out their music, and found myself enjoying it, specially the latest release “Back Through Time”, which came out on Napalm Records last June.
Recently, the band did a North American tour with Kamelot, and before the show at the House of Blues in Hollywood, I had the pleasure of sitting down with frontman Christopher Bowes to discuss the tour and the pirate metal gimmick (or lack of). Just as I asked Chris to share his favorite rock ‘n roll celebrity story, Blackguard’s Paul Zinay as he jumped in to share his own, after which Chris came up with an even better story. Listen to this ridiculous, fun-filled 11-minute conversation below, and check out the band’s facebook page after that. They have also just been confirmed for Paganfest 2012 next April, so keep your eyes peeled for Alestorm as they are coming to destroy your town soon.
