Interview With Kataklysm Frontman Maurizio Iacono (Audio)

By Andrew Bansal

Canadian death metal band Kataklysm celebrated their 20th anniversary as a band with the release of the ‘Iron Will’ live concert/documentary DVD last year, and are now ready to put out their 11th studio album ‘Waiting For The End To Come’ on October 29th via Nuclear Blast Records. The album sees them make a conscious attempt to do something new, while still keeping intact the signature Kataklysm ‘Northern hyperblast’ sound. Upon listening to it, I discovered this new album to be an absolutely skull-crushing set of tunes, and with the cover artwork as epic as it is, this album is worthy of occupying the mantlepiece of any genuine extreme metal fan. A couple of weeks ago, I did an interview with vocalist Maurizio Iacono to talk about all things Kataklysm. The interview was on Episode 8 of the Metal Assault radio show on Razor KXRZ in the live broadcast last Wednesday October 23rd 2013, and now the podcast version of the entire episode is posted below. The Kataklysm segment begins at exactly the 1:09:00 mark. Check out the full playlist for the episode here. Continue reading “Interview With Kataklysm Frontman Maurizio Iacono (Audio)”

Paradise Lost Guitarist Greg Mackintosh Talks About ‘Tragic Illusion 25’ & More

By Andrew Bansal

Throughout the 25 years of their existence, British gothic-doom metal band Paradise Lost have not only put out some great music, but have been able to explore a diverse range of musical styles and tendencies, all while still keeping their artistic integrity. Their most recent studio album ‘Tragic Idol’ turned out to be an excellent offering of dark, heavy music by all means, with stellar tracks like ‘Crucify’, ‘Honesty In Death’, ‘To The Darkness’ and many others.’ This year they are celebrating their 25th anniversary with the release of the ‘Tragic Illusion 25 (The Rarities)’ compilation, which is a collection of the B-sides and rare tracks they put out over the years. The package also includes re-recordings of two old tracks and a brand new track. A week ago, I spoke to guitarist Greg Mackintosh to discuss this release among other things. Read the conversation below and check out the new track ‘Loneliness Remains’. Continue reading “Paradise Lost Guitarist Greg Mackintosh Talks About ‘Tragic Illusion 25’ & More”

Morbidity Talk About ‘Banish The Posers’ Fest & More

By Andrew Bansal

Morbidity are a death metal quintet hailing from Dhaka, Bangladesh and have been around for a couple of years now, spreading their message of occultism through the music on their 2012 demo ‘Pits Of Eternal Torment’ and skullcrushing live performances. Earlier this year, they re-released the demo as a split album called ‘Impious Conjuration’ with the band Exorcised. Now they are preparing to partake in the upcoming ‘Banish The Posers’ Fest in their hometown on November 16th. A gig put together by local promoters Primitive Invocation, it promises to bring together the best of Bangladeshi underground extreme metal with bands from Malaysia, Thailand and India. A few days ago, I caught up with the band to talk about this fest, and just about everything else concerning the band at this point. Read the conversation below, along with a taste of their music. If you’re in Dhaka, make sure you catch Nafarmaan at the gig next month. And for extreme metal fans elsewhere, Morbidity is worth checking out. Continue reading “Morbidity Talk About ‘Banish The Posers’ Fest & More”

In Conversation With Slayer Frontman Tom Araya

By Andrew Bansal

Heavy metal giants Slayer have had a difficult year, to say the least. Parting ways with original and longtime drummer Dave Lombardo followed by the tragic and sudden death of guitarist Jeff Hanneman left them shocked and devastated, and as the days passed, they were under the scrutiny of fans who followed the band’s every move. Taking the challenge head on, Slayer decided to move forward, recruiting Paul Bostaph to make a return to the band, and continuing on with Gary Holt on guitar. They will be embarking on a North American headline tour on October 25th with support acts Gojira and 4Arm, their first full headline tour in a long, long time, and will include two shows at the Hollywood Palladium. Yesterday on a fine Los Angeles Monday morning, I spoke to bassist/vocalist Tom Araya to talk about the Palladium shows, the tour, fans’ opinions, the new lineup, the next album and the recent India show. Enjoy the conversation below. Continue reading “In Conversation With Slayer Frontman Tom Araya”

Megadeth Bassist David Ellefson Discusses Autobiography ‘My Life With Deth’

By Andrew Bansal

Throughout my journey as a journalist in hard rock and heavy metal over the past few years, I’ve constantly maintained that Megadeth bassist David Ellefson is one of the most professional, articulate and down-to-earth guys ever to have graced our favorite genre of music. His return to Megadeth in 2010 couldn’t have come at a better time, and he has had a huge role in taking the band to the next level, specially as a live act. And now, he’s ready to release his autobiography titled ‘My Life With Deth’, which is hitting book stores on October 29th via publishing company Simon And Schuster. I couldn’t imagine anyone in metal more ready to talk about his own life, and upon reading this book, I found it to meet all the expectations I had from it. A couple of days ago, even as he’s currently on a Megadeth tour with Black Sabbath in South America, he took 15 minutes out of his schedule to talk to me about this book. Enjoy the conversation below, and if you’re into rock n’ roll books at all, this is certainly one you should purchase.
