Dark Tranquillity Play Unforgettable Show At House Of Blues Sunset Strip

By Jason Williams

February 22nd 2014, House Of Blues Sunset Strip, West Hollywood CA:  When one talks about the ‘Big 3’ of melodic death metal, the first band that comes to mind is probably In Flames. At the Gates would be the second most likely choice. And in that same list, yet not quite as mentioned for some precarious reason, are Dark Tranquillity. Not many know it, but they actually formed before the aforementioned bands. 1989 would be the year that Mikael Stanne and Niklas Sundin created a band that would help pioneer one of the most popular genres of extreme, underground metal. Not going in the new direction that In Flames have gone for the past several years or reforming and playing select venues and festivals as At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity have been consistenly putting out quality albums for the past 23 years, and their tenth album Construct was met with wide acclaim.  This was to be their first US tour in nearly four years. Joining the Gothenburg pioneers were techincal thrash band Exmortus and highly anticipated on their first US tour, Finland’s own Omnium Gatherum. This was to be my first time seeing any of these bands live and I couldn’t wait. With longstanding power metallers Manowar playing the very same night in Pomona, I was wondering how the attendance would be for this show, considering Manowar tours once nearly every half a decade in the US.  Continue reading “Dark Tranquillity Play Unforgettable Show At House Of Blues Sunset Strip”

Manowar Bring ‘Kings Of Metal MMXIV’ Tour To Pomona

By Andrew Bansal

February 22nd 2014, Fox Theater, Pomona CA: Even though they’ve been waging the metal battle since 1980, New York classic heavy metal veterans Manowar have played very few concerts in their home country, and by their own admission, never did a proper US tour. It’s one of the most confounding mysteries of the heavy metal world, but finally in the year 2014 Manowar took a giant step towards rectifying it by embarking on the ‘Kings Of Metal MMXIV’ US tour. Celebrating the release of the re-recorded ‘Kings Of Metal’ album as well as encapsulating their entire career through this tour, Manowar were poised to play in front of their ultra-loyal and eagerly awaiting fans, a majority of whom had never seen the band live. This tour paid its only visit to Southern California, as Manowar played at the Fox Theater in Pomona on February 22nd for what turned out to be a momentous Saturday night. Loaded Hollywood Pays Tribute To The Gods

By Andrew Bansal

February 21st 2014, Loaded Rock Bar, Hollywood CA: Fridays at Loaded are usually entertaining for all involved, but with a lineup consisting of premier old-school Metallica tribute band Cliff ‘Em All, classic Black Sabbath tribute act Electric Funeral, Doyle-era Misfits tribute Doyle Rules and local all-female rock n’ roll outfit Glam Skanks, this particular show presented by Lara Gladstone promised to be a special event. I had a feeling it was going to be the best rock/metal show this venue has seen till date, and sure enough, my gut feeling wasn’t wrong whatsoever. Through this review I’ll attempt to capture the madness that was last night. Continue reading “Loaded Hollywood Pays Tribute To The Gods”

February 21st 2014, Vacation Vinyl, Los Angeles CA: There is never a shortage of free live entertainment in Los Angeles, with various venues doing no-cover shows and record stores hosting free events on a regular basis. Local hardcore punk bands Nomads and Death March came together for one such free in-store at Vacation Vinyl in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles yesterday. This was a matinee show in celebration of the release of Nomads’ self-titled debut EP 7-inch, which was available for sale at the store. Despite such an early show on a Friday, the turnout was great and the store was packed with people even before it started, and after a swift gear setup by the bands, things got underway at 5 PM, as scheduled.  Continue reading “Nomads & Death March Play Free Matinee Show At Vacation Vinyl”
