The Iron Maidens Discuss Upcoming AXS TV Gig & More

By Andrew Bansal

The Iron Maidens, the world’s best known and perhaps only all-female tribute to the almighty Iron Maiden, have been playing gigs since 2001 and unlike most tribute acts, have broken out of the local tribute scene and ventured into lands afar including Japan and South America. As Los Angeles residents, us Maiden fans are lucky enough to call them this amazing group of ladies a hometown band. On September 9th 2013, the Maidens will be making an appearance on American national television, through a totally well-deserved spot on AXS TV’s “World’s Greatest Tribute Bands” series. Hosted and produced by Katie Daryl, this concert series takes place at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood regularly on Mondays from 8 to 9 PM local time, is free of cost to the audience at the venue, and is broadcast live on AXS TV. After witnessing some great tributes to bands like The Doors, Metallica, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, The Police and The Beatles over the past few months, it’s finally time to get stoked for a tribute to Iron Maiden. A couple of days ago, I did an interview with drummer Linda McDonald, singer Kirsten Rosenberg, bassist Wanda Ortiz and guitarist Nikki Stringfield to talk about this AXS TV show, among other things. Read the conversation below. Continue reading “The Iron Maidens Discuss Upcoming AXS TV Gig & More”

Audio Interview With Bjorn Englen

By Andrew Bansal

Currently playing bass for Dio Disciples, Tony MacAlpine and Soul Sign, Bjorn Englen has been a prolific musician over the years, also having played bass for Yngwie Malmsteen from 2007 to 2012 and before that with Robin McAuley, Uli Jon Roth, Quiet Riot and a few others. Working with this variety of musicians and touring worldwide has made him a versatile bassist and performer. Last Saturday on August 31st 2013, he held a bass clinic at the Carvin store in the heart of Hollywood, during which he performed some Yngwie and Soul Sign material and did a Q&A with the small but enthusiastic audience to talk about bass playing, gear, and his experiences with the various bands he’s been with, among other things. After this very successful clinic, I had a chance to speak to him for an interview, where we discussed just about everything he is and has been involved in. Listen to the 13-minute chat below and LA folks make sure you catch his band Soul Sign at the Joint on September 26th. Continue reading “Audio Interview With Bjorn Englen”

Ovvl Talk Family, Upcoming Record & More

By Avinash Mittur

Since 2011, the Bay Area’s Ovvl have been entertaining audiences all over with their classic rock and punk inspired style of heavy metal. The band was founded by guitarists and brothers Axell Baechle and K. Baechle. The two recruited elder sibling Clint to man the drums, and soon after found bassist Melanie Burkett, thus completing the current lineup. The band has steadily toured the states since their inception and released their self-titled debut record in Fall 2012. I caught up with the band after seeing them play a house show in Concord, CA- we got to chat about their current three week tour of the western United States, the making of their debut record, the family dynamic and their upcoming second album among other topics. Enjoy the conversation below, and be sure to catch the band on tour over the next three weeks as they trek across the western half of America. Audio Interview With Ex-Misfits Guitarist Doyle

By Andrew Bansal

Ex-Misfits guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein has been sharing the stage with Glenn Danzig to play Misfits tunes in his shows for a number of years now, but this year Doyle broke new ground and unveiled a new chapter in his musical career with the release of his solo debut album ‘Abominator’, which by all means is a solid slab of heavy music. Last Friday August 30th 2013, he took part in Danzig’s 25th anniversary show at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City. Before the show, I got a chance to do an interview with him to talk about these Danzig shows, the solo album and guitar playing, among other things. Listen to the 10-minute conversation below. Crag Dweller Talk Debut Album, Touring & More

By Avinash Mittur

Over the last few years, the Pacific Northwest has been gaining a reputation for housing some of the coolest underground heavy metal in America. Hailing from Portland, Crag Dweller are one of the freshest additions to the new resurgence of heavy rock music. On Sunday August 25th, I had the chance to see these guys play a house show in Concord, a suburban city in the East Bay area of California and I was thoroughly impressed by their energetic, yet impossibly tight brand of brawny, muscular stoner rock. After the show had come to a close, I had the opportunity of chatting with the band-bassist/vocalist Cliff Martin, guitarist/vocalist Rich Vivarelli and drummer Travis Clowe. Enjoy the conversation below, and be sure to catch the band on tour this week with Ovvl. Continue reading “Crag Dweller Talk Debut Album, Touring & More”

The mighty British extreme metal veterans Carcass are back with a new album called Surgical Steel, due out in North America on September 17th via Nuclear Blast Records. A couple of days ago, I had the pleasure of talking to bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker to discuss the creative process behind the album, what it means to the band and the fans, the lineup, the album mixing ‘drama’, the upcoming US tour, and more.
