In-depth Interview With Chthonic Bassist Doris Yeh

By Andrew Bansal

Taiwanese extreme metal band Chthonic have been known to blend metal with oriental sounds, and throughout the lyrical concepts behind their previous six studio albums, they’ve strived to enlighten people with the Taiwanese history. They’re talented musicians and without knowing any of the lyrical stories, their music and live performance alone got my attention in a positive way when I first heard this band in 2009, but digging into the lyrics and the concepts adds further to the experience and almost makes it a history lesson. Recently, the band put out their seventh studio album ‘Bu´-Tik’, and not only have they experiemented with the musical arrangements on this album, but have also expressed the story visually through a series of music videos. A few weeks after the release of the album, I spoke to bassist Doris Yeh about the new album, the music videos and more in this very informative yet entertaining chat. Read below as Doris delves into the massive amounts of effort the band put into this album. Continue reading “In-depth Interview With Chthonic Bassist Doris Yeh”

Nekrogoblikon Talk ‘Power’, Goblins, Music Videos & Lots More

By Andrew Bansal

From the murkiest depths of the unforgiving, unrelenting local pay-to-play scene, Los Angeles’ very own ‘goblin metal’ band Nekrogoblikon have emerged as a truly entertaining live band that know how to blend their love and passion for heavy metal with two very accessible theatrical aspects, i.e. goblins and humor. They’ve been around for more than five years and I’ve seen these guys put on some impressive shows at clubs in LA, but recently, they’ve become a lot more popular and have achieved success within a short time period. Whether or not they’re able to sustain this success remains to be seen, but as of now, they’re riding on a goblin-induced high. Their new album ‘Power’ came out in September, and a few days after the album release, I had an expectedly fun conversation with vocalist Nicholas Van Doom and guitarist Alex ‘Goldberg’ Alereza. Enjoy it below, along with their music videos. Continue reading “Nekrogoblikon Talk ‘Power’, Goblins, Music Videos & Lots More”

In-depth Interview With Onslaught Guitarist Nige Rockett

By Andrew Bansal

British thrash metal band Onslaught began 30 years ago in 1983, and went through a long period of inactivity from 1991 to 2004 but then they made their comeback and with albums like ‘Killing Peace’ (2007) and ‘The Sounds Of Violence’ (2011), they’ve become stronger than ever. As of now, they have just released their sixth studio album simply titled ‘VI’ via AFM Records and have just begun the ‘Slaughterfest 2013’ European tour with Exhumer, Master and M-Pire Of Evil. Last month, I had the chance to talk in detail with guitarist Nige Rockett about the new album, touring, gear and other things. Check out the conversation below, along with a couple of tunes from the new album. Continue reading “In-depth Interview With Onslaught Guitarist Nige Rockett”

Katatonia Drummer Talks About Touring, Remix Album & More

By Andrew Bansal

Swedish metal band Katatonia just concluded a North American tour with co-headliners Cult Of Luna and support acts Intronaut and Tesseract, their third North American tour within a period of one year. In my humble opinion they blew Opeth off the stage when they opened for them at the Roxy Theatre earlier this year, and this time they played at the El Rey Theatre and put on an even more powerful show, undoubtedly enhanced by the excellent sound quality and the atmosphere of the venue. In my experience, this is a band that has been better with every performance in recent times, and they played a great mix of old and new material at the El Rey last Sunday October 6th. Before the show, I sat down with drummer Daniel Liljekvist for a candid conversation about touring, the remix album, and more. Check it out below. In Conversation With Lazer/Wulf Guitarist Bryan Aiken

By Andrew Bansal

Lazer/Wulf, an experimental metal trio based out of Atlanta/Athens, Georgia, are currently out on a daring mission, touring with Orange Goblin and Holy Grail as an opening act on an extensive run of dates. But judging by their stellar performance at the Satellite in Los Angeles last Saturday October 5th and the kind of response they got from the crowd, they are handling the challenge extremely well and their music seems to translate across successfully to fans of Orange Goblin and Holy Grail. Highly impressed by their set, I contacted the band the day after the show and asked for an interview. On Monday October 7th, I got on the phone with guitarist Bryan Aiken and talked all things Lazer/Wulf. Check out our conversation below, along with a taste of the band’s music.
