Turisas And Firewind: A Night Of Truly Epic Music

By Avinash Mittur

February 22nd 2013, Key Club, Hollywood CA: After making a triumphant run through the U.S. nearly a year ago on the annual ‘PaganFest’ tour, Finland’s Turisas have returned on a headlining tour with Greek power metal warriors Firewind. The pair have been utilizing local openers on the many stops of this tour, and this date at the Key Club in Hollywood was no different. Though the venues on the Sunset Strip tend to make poor choices with the local acts more often than not, the Key Club managed to put together a great lineup for this show. This ‘Guards of Glory’ tour stop proved to be a consistently entertaining night for fans of fantasy-laced epic heavy metal, and a joyous celebration of everything over the top, silly, geeky, and plain awesome about this music and its culture. In Flames Returns To Southern California For 2nd Leg Of North American Tour

By Spike Steffenhagen

Editor’s Note: After an extensive North American run as support act to Lamb Of God last fall, Swedish melodic death metal veterans In Flames are back in the continent on a headline run of their own, with support from Demon Hunter, All Shall Perish and Battlecross. They performed at the House of Blues in San Diego as part of this tour, and our newest contributer Spike Steffenhagen was in attendance. Below is his review of the In Flames set, along with a photo from the gig, provided by Chad Alexander. Please note that Spike wasn’t able to watch any of the opening acts, so his review is on the In Flames performance only.

Winter Rite 2013 Tour Plows Through Los Angeles

By Avinash Mittur

February 8th 2013, Troubadour, Los Angeles, CA: For the past few weeks Norway’s most technically accomplished black metal act, Enslaved, have been hopping their way around North America with what can only be described as an oddball line up, and last Friday they paid a visit to the Troubadour in West Hollywood. This “Winter Rite 2013” tour has featured truly an eclectic mix of bands: the dark and haunting rock of Ancient VVisdom, Royal Thunder’s soulful blues rock, Pallbearer’s unrelentingly heavy doom metal and of course, Enslaved, who have managed to turn heads for decades with their brazenly progressive black metal. For fans into a wide variety of styles of heavy music, this night could have potentially been amazing. For others there to see only one band, it might have been extremely scattershot. Enslaved fans were guaranteed a great time however. Despite this utterly random lineup, Enslaved’s outstanding set was enough to justify spending this freezing Friday night at the Troubadour. Dark Roots Of Thrash Tour Pummels Hollywood

By Avinash Mittur

February 2nd 2013, House of Blues, Hollywood, CA: When grunge hit in the mid-nineties, thrash was one metal genre that truly suffered. While hair metal simply died with a whimper, many of the reigning thrash groups at the time attempted to alter their style to fit in with the new musical landscape. There were however, a small number of bands that refused to be anything but themselves. Berkeley, CA’s Testament and Overkill from New Jersey were among those stubborn bands, and today they are enjoying some of the greatest success of their careers. Now what happens when those two bands decide to embark on a cross-country tour together? You get a night of utter chaos and a couple hours of amazing music. This ‘Dark Roots of Thrash’ stop at the House of Blues on Sunset was all that and more, an outstanding night of thrash metal by any standard. High On Fire and CoC Unleash Sludge On Santa Cruz

By Avinash Mittur

December 18th 2012, The Atrium, Santa Cruz, CA: After two and a half months of killer shows in Los Angeles, I’ve made a temporary return to the bay area. Only days after arriving I was treated to a lineup I just couldn’t turn down- High on Fire, Corrosion of Conformity, Goatwhore and Lo-Pan at the Atrium in Santa Cruz. High on Fire’s latest record, De Vermis Mysteriis, has been in constant rotation for me, so finally getting to see the band play in support of it was an opportunity I simply couldn’t miss. In addition, I’ve been wanting to see the current incarnation of Corrosion of Conformity for some time now, and this show finally offered me that chance. Fans of sludge and stoner metal were treated to a consistently entertaining night of music, but those only looking to catch the headlining acts may have been disappointed with the relatively short sets. Testament Plays First Ever India Gig

By Vikram Chandrasekar

December 15th 2012, Embassy International Riding School, Bangalore, India: I’ve been listening to metal for the last 26 years, and have been a Testament fan since listening to their first album ‘The Legacy’ in 1987. I have watched rock and metal concerts around the world for a number of years now. This, however, was my first time watching Testament. I made my way to the NH7 Weekender festival in Bangalore, and the biggest reason, was to watch Testament.

The NH7 open air festival had 6 different stages with a total of 60 bands playing, but the evening at the Bacardi Black Rock Arena progressed slowly. Inner Sanctum kicked off proceedings followed by Warren Mendosa. The place felt like what it was, a laid-back weekend festival. Continue reading “Testament Plays First Ever India Gig”
