Revocation’s Dave Davidson Talks Summer Slaughter, Music Theory & Lots More

By Andrew Bansal

One band that’s truly breaking new ground in the realm of modern heavy music is Boston, Massachussetts based group Revocation. Led by guitarist/vocalist Dave Davidson, the band blends old-school thrash with modern metal elements, along with jazzy, progressive parts intertwined in their compositions. On stage they have an enormous sound and presence, as was evident during their highly impressive performance at this year’s Summer Slaughter which came through Los Angeles last Saturday July 20th at the House Of Blues Sunset Strip. Shortly after their set, I caught up with Dave to talk about the tour, the new self-titled album (out on Relapse Records August 2nd), music theory, gear and more. Check out the conversation below and do not miss them on Summer Slaughter! Continue reading “Revocation’s Dave Davidson Talks Summer Slaughter, Music Theory & Lots More”

Catching Up With Animals As Leaders Guitarist Javier Reyes

By Andrew Bansal

Rapidly rising into becoming one of the biggest names in American metal, Animals As Leaders have caught the attention of guitar nerds and heavy music fans alike with their two studio albums released so far, the self-titled debut in 2009 and the follow-up ‘Weightless’ in 2011. Their live shows have been fantastic on previous tours, and currently they are back on another extensive North American run for Summer Slaughter 2013 with the likes of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Periphery, The Ocean, Revocation and others. A couple of days ago on Saturday July 20th, this tour made a visit at the House of Blues Sunset Strip, and before the show I got a chance to catch up with Javier Reyes. The focus is always on lead guitarist and band leader Tosin Abasi, so this is quite a rare interview with Javier in which he discusses the band’s recent travels that included a show in India of all places. Enjoy the conversation below and check them out on Summer Slaughter. Continue reading “Catching Up With Animals As Leaders Guitarist Javier Reyes”

In Conversation With Orchid

Interview by Avinash Mittur

San Francisco-based doom rock quartet Orchid released their new album ‘The Mouths Of Madness’ via Nuclear Blast Records earlier this year, an album our writer Avinash gave a stellar review around the time of its release. Even though the band continues to have a much larger fan following in Europe as compared to their own country, they do play occasional hometown San Francisco gigs to packed venues. Last Friday at Slim’s was one such occasion, and prior to the show, Avinash caught up with vocalist Theo Mindell, guitarist Mark Thomas Baker and drummer Carter Kennedy for an in-depth chat about all things Orchid. Enjoy the conversation below. Continue reading “In Conversation With Orchid”

Fleshgod Apocalypse Frontman Discusses New Album ‘Labyrinth’

Interview by J.C. Green

Italian extreme metal band Fleshgod Apocalypse began in 2007, but in a short amount of time they’ve gained a sizable following for themselves, through two impressive studio albums ‘Oracle’ and Agony’, and active touring around the world. The band caught the attention of one and all in the extreme metal genre, specially when they toured the United States on their previous touring cycle. Now, they are ready to build on that momentum and put out their third album ‘Labyrinth’ via Nuclear Blast Records on August 16th in Europe and August 20th in North America. A few days ago, our writer J.C. Green spoke to vocalist/guitarist Tommasso Riccardi to discuss in detail the various aspects surrounding the album. Read the conversation below. Brian Tichy Talks In Detail About His Zeppelin Tribute Shows

By Andrew Bansal

Brian Tichy has been known for his drumming prowess and his contributions to the world of rock drumming through his collaborations with various heavy hitters in the genre, but now is the time Tichy is taking initiative by himself to gather a group of musician friends and do things purely for fun, both for the musicians themselves and for the audiences. His tribute to the late great Led Zeppelin drummer John Henry Bonham through the Bonzo Bash shows has been well received over the past year and unearthed perhaps the largest gathering of rock drummers ever, and as a sequel or spin-off of those events, he’s now taking out his Zeppelin cover band The Moby Dicks to play club shows. Their next show is at the Viper Room this Saturday July 20th. A couple of days ago, I spoke to him over the phone to talk in detail about his Zeppelin-related endeavors. Read below as we both geek out over our mutual favorite band. Continue reading “Brian Tichy Talks In Detail About His Zeppelin Tribute Shows”
