August 5th 2016, The Redwood Bar & Grill, Los Angeles CA: Oakland, California stoner/sludge/doom/crust group Badr Vögu recently completed a two-week U.S. west coast tour, and as part of the run, played a Los Angeles area gig last Friday August 5th 2016, at the Redwood Bar & Grill in downtown LA. This event was put together by HPLC gigs, and also featured local bands Trapped Within Burning Machinery, Pigeonwing and Galena. Even on a busy Friday night wherein numerous other concerts transpired in and around LA, this event packed the venue and served up quite a savory treat of heavy jams for all in attendance. July 29th 2016, Fonda Theatre, Hollywood CA: The Claypool Lennon Delirium, a brand new collaboration between Les Claypool and Sean Lennon, formed in 2015, released its debut album ‘Monolith Of Phobos’ earlier this year, and embarked on an extensive North American headline tour to present this material on stages all over the continent, for the first time. The band, along with touring support act Jjuujjuu, arrived to a capacity crowd at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood for a gig on Friday July 29th 2016. For those that hadn’t listened to the album, The Claypool Lennon Delirium was expected to unite the best of the Primus and Beatles worlds. It turned out to be that, and so much more, as attendees were treated to a memorable concert experience. Gospel Of The Shred: Holy Grail, Exmortus & Spellcaster Scorch The Roxy

By Andrew Bansal

August 7th 2016, The Roxy, West Hollywood CA: Three of the brightest young talented groups in metal and Prosthetic Records label mates Holy Grail, Exmortus and Spellcaster joined forces for the ‘Fellowship Of The Strings’ U.S. tour this summer, to bring their distinct brands of guitar-oriented/shred metal to the masses. The four-week trek began in mid-July and came to an end last night in Holy Grail and Exmortus’ hometown, at the Roxy in West Hollywood. These three bands have played in and around the Los Angeles area numerous times in the past, but separately and never together in an all-ages venue of this magnitude. Choosing what show to attend on any given night of the week is, more often than not, an extremely serious dilemma for LA concertgoers, and one learns from personal experience that the eventual choice made is often the wrong one. But even with four-fifths of Judas Priest performing next door at the Whisky-A-Go-Go, metal diehards turned up in reasonably good numbers to support this event at the Roxy, and were treated to a show that more than vindicated their choice of Sunday evening live entertainment. Unsavory Drive-Thru Metal: Mac Sabbath Headlines Eclectic Costume-Themed Extravaganza At The Regent

By Lisa Burke

August 5th 2016, The Regent, Los Angeles CA:Costumes featured in rock n roll, punk, and heavy metal bands have been a tasteful or not-so-tasteful debate for many years, with a vast array of varied opinions on the subject. Questions and debates have risen on this subject with most who are on the anti-costume side forming the uninformed opinion that it “cheapens” the music despite the obvious extra added cost to provide said costumes, props, and other-worldly stories into the live performance. The bottom line here that it is important to ask oneself at least these two questions before judging any band in this theater of the absurd category 1.) Would the music sound skillfully executed with or without the costumes? 2.) Were the costumes, extra costumed characters, props, and theatrical action telling a story that was enhanced by the music or vice-versa? This is how you step out of the box of band gimmick or shtick versus well thought-out musical stage performance. On Friday August 5th 2016, at the rising highly favored downtown music venue The Regent, I attended a very interesting live heavy metal, rock n’ roll and punk show featuring four diverse bands who all use costumes and props as a major part of their live performances. Headliners for the evening were Mac Sabbath with support from PPL MVR, Haunted Garage, and Radioactive Chicken Heads. This show was chock full of weirder-than-weird themes and lyrical comedy that also had its significant moments of skill and talent that deserve a call-out. Pilgrimage In Session: Metal God Entertains Disciples At Musicians Institute

August 5th 2016, Musicians Institute, Hollywood CA: It is not often that you pack a 500-capacity concert hall on a busy Friday night in Los Angeles, for an event where all you promise to do on stage is sit and talk, unless you happen to be the Metal God. Last Friday August 5th 2016, Judas Priest singer Rob Halford made a visit to Musicians Institute in Hollywood to take part in the music school’s ‘Conversation Series’, wherein musicians sit down with Alternative Press senior editor Ryan J. Downey (who has also worked withMTV News, Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter, among others) for an in-depth one-on-one talk. The event was obviously freely accessible to MI students, but was also opened to the general public with a limited number of free tickets distributed online via Eventbrite. Most residents of Los Angeles have a love/hate relationship with the city, but one of the perks of living here is getting to attend such unique events. Fans gleefully grasped the opportunity to be in the Metal God’s presence up close and personal, but perhaps little did anyone know that the session would be just an entertaining as seeing the man front Judas Priest in concert. July 21st 2016, Complex, Glendale CA: The brainchild of Harassor guitarist James L. Brown, Vorpal Sword blends raw black metal with elements of industrial music, noise and punk, and all its compositions are singlehandedly written and recorded by Brown himself. Vorpal Sword is a brand new entity which saw its 7-track, 16-minute debut ‘10,000 Stab Wounds’ released in November 2015 by Rising Beast Recordings, and will be putting out two more new releases on cassette in late August. Sporadic live rituals began in early 2016, with gigs at the Lash, Honey Trap and Five Star Bar in downtown LA, and on Thursday July 21st, Vorpal Sword playing its fourth show decimated the stage at Complex in Glendale, as part of a Church Of The 8th Day/Elegy Ensemble presented event.
