Jefferson Starship At The Saban: A Classic Rock Throwback

By Andrew Bansal

May 23rd 2014, Saban Theatre, Beverly Hills CA: Embarking on their journey in the early 70s, Jefferson Starship is a San Francisco-based psychedelic/progressive rock group that began as a successor to Jefferson Airplane but over the past four decades established its own name under the leadership of Jefferson Airplane co-founder Paul Kantner. As would be expected from any band that lasted this long, they went through transitions in musical styles, from the psychedelic classic rock of the early 70s to the poppy, commercial 80s era and revisiting the classic tendencies on later albums in the 90s and 2000s. Last night, they paid a visit to the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills to perform Airplane’s 1967 album ‘Surrealistic Pillow’ in its entirety along with an assortment of other classics, and for a rock fanatic like myself whose parents’ age wasn’t even in double figures when this album was released, it was a rare opportunity, and for older fans, it was an equally great chance to relive the classics. DevilDriver & Whitechapel Co-headline Heavy Lineup At House Of Blues Sunset Strip

Review & photos by Andrew Bansal

May 20th 2014, House Of Blues Sunset Strip, West Hollywood CA: Still going strong in promotion of their latest album ‘Winter Kills’, Los Angeles’ modern metal veterans DevilDriver have embarked on a co-headline tour with Knoxville TN’s extreme force Whitechapel, along with support acts Revocation, Carnifex, Rivers Of Nihil and Fit For An Autopsy, making it an all-crushing lineup from start to finish. The tour began in Denver on May 17th and the six-band caravan made its way to DevilDriver’s home territory at the House Of Blues Sunset Strip last night to play in front of an enthusiastic audience that had turned up in good numbers to support the show. All of these are highly active touring bands, even by today’s music industry standards, and the onus was on each of them to vindicate their fans’ unwavering support and deliver a set that would compel these fans to return for the next show. Scion Rock Fest Returns To Pomona

Review & photos by Andrew Bansal

May 17th 2014, Pomona CA: Scion A/V’s annual marquee event, the Scion Rock Fest, travels to a different American city every year, and three years after it was held here in 2011, it returned to grace Pomona yesterday with a stellar lineup of bands from across the country and beyond. This time, event wristbands were handed out through various record stores and outlets well in advance of the show date, which made things much smoother and easier for attendees to enter and there was no need to stand in long lines for wristband pickup. For this one day, the Fox Theater/Glass House enclosure in Pomona was converted into a metal pilgrimage, and the Los Angeles metal community was out in full force. In a mad dash from stage to stage, yours truly managed to watch and photograph each of the 26 bands in the lineup for long enough to be able to review them all and capture the action for your reading and viewing pleasure (full photo gallery is near the bottom of the page). Atriarch, Icon Of Phobos, Doctorshopper & Crowhurst Perform At Complex

Review & photos by Andrew Bansal

May 16th 2014, Complex, Glendale CA: Over the past year or so, ever since the place starting hosting underground metal, there hasn’t been such a thing as a bad show at the Complex. So, having not seen any of the four bands that were about to take the stage here for this show but with the expectation that the venue and the promoters it works with will deliver the goods once again, I headed to the Complex last night. On this occasion, it was Portland OR-based blackened death/doom band Atriarch, currently on a West Coast touring run, serving as the headliner along with local support acts Icon Of Phobos, Doctorshopper and Crowhurst rounding out the lineup put together by the Elegy Ensemble for a show that would potentially appease the LA underground metal faithful that decided to turn up for the gig.
