April 21st 2014, House Of Blues Sunset Strip, West Hollywood CA: <\/strong>Having started out as Danger Kitty and then changing to call themselves Metal Shop, Metal Skool and finally in 2008 arriving at a name that would stick, Steel Panther have been reigning supreme on the Sunset Strip in the West Hollywood area of Los Angeles for the past 14 years. Initially only a parody\/comedy live metal act, they began writing their own music and once they started releasing studio albums, their fame and popularity outgrew the Strip and they went on to become an internationally touring band. But despite their overwhelming success, they still kept returning to Los Angeles to play a handful of residency shows at the House Of Blues, their home for the past three-and-a-half years. But they kept garnering a larger fan base elsewhere, and the number of residency shows kept decreasing. This month, they announced a ‘threesome’ of shows, the last of which took place last night, but no one in attendance could have perhaps anticipated it to be the final residency show Steel Panther would ever play on the Sunset Strip.<\/p>\n

The venue was absolutely packed and the eagerly awaiting audience was in typically high spirits, singing along to all the 80s metal classics being played on the PA. At 11:20, the curtains drew apart and Steel Panther took the stage to treat their hometown faithful with a 100-minute show that fully brought forth their patented recipe of metal, comedy, parody and sleaze. In comparison to the Steel Panther show I saw here two weeks ago, there were a few changes in the set list, including the return of the Satchel guitar solo albeit in an abbreviated version, and while their staple jokes were very much prevalent, there were a few fresh ones as well. Performance-wise, they did what was expected of them, once again proving themselves as thorough professionals. But most strikingly, the average hotness of the three dozen chicks that went up on stage for the last 15 minutes of the show was undoubtedly much, much higher than the April 7 show, as you can probably tell from some of the photos featured towards the end of the gallery below.<\/p>\n

Fittingly, they brought on two of their most regular guests Joey Fatone and Hal Sparks to join them for the final song of the set, and with that, Steel Panther said goodbye to their House Of Blues residency, bringing an end to their 14-year reign on the Sunset Strip. While they’ll certainly be playing LA shows in the near and distant future as a touring band and at bigger venues, it was very much a bittersweet moment for their fans present here, who’re happy to see the band succeed on an international level but at the same time deep down know very well that perhaps no one on the Sunset Strip will ever be able to match the sheer entertainment value of a Steel Panther show.<\/p>\n
