October 13th 2017, The End, Nashville TN: There was a chill in the air last Friday night in Nashville, Tennessee. Autumn had finally arrived in The South. Folks traded in their denim vests for jean jackets to hit the rock ‘n roll show that evening. Just west of downtown Nashville, there is a small bundle of buildings known as the ‘Rock Block’. Every night you can hear punk or rock music pouring out from various doors residing on this street. The two legendary venues in this cluster, Exit/In and The End, are spaces that have catered to alternative music for decades. This past, brisk, Friday evening, proved that they still do. October 15th 2017, Greek Theatre, Los Angeles CA: When their debut album ‘Fallen’ hit airwaves worldwide in 2003, the gothic rock/metal band Evanescence was all the rage. Over the course of the subsequent decade, they followed it up with two successful albums ‘The Open Door’ (2006) and the self-titled effort (2011). Due to a variety of reasons, releases have come few and far between for this band, but in 2017, they have returned with their most ambitious effort yet, ‘Synthesis’, an assortment of previous material reworked with orchestral arrangements, plus two new songs. While this album still awaits its November 10 release, the band has begun touring North America to recreate it live with a full orchestra. For its second show, the tour arrived at a sold-out Greek Theatre in Los Angeles last Sunday October 15th, and as it turned out, the concert made for more than a mere nostalgia trip for those that know of Evanescence from that 2003 album. September 7th 2017, Saban Theatre, Beverly Hills CA: German classic metal legends Accept were in town for a very special show, to promote their latest Nuclear Blast release ‘The Rise Of Chaos’, and of course, to present an assortment of classics from their illustrious career spanning nearly five decades. For this event at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, Vicious Rumors were chosen as the support act. LA metalheads came out in large numbers to enjoy an evening of the finest old-school metal. September 5th 2017, Brick By Brick, San Diego CA: Former Iron Maiden frontman Blaze Bayley made a San Diego stop on his ongoing North American headline tour to promote his new record, ‘Endure and Survive: Infinite Entanglement II’, as well as to play some Iron Maiden tunes, of course. September 1st 2017, Union, Los Angeles CA: When one door closes another one opens, and in the metal life in LA, the head promotor at Church Of The 8th Day is still making strong waves in the community booking various shows all around town despite the unfortunate abrupt ending of the Complex venue which he had made a home for quite some time. Soon enough I’m sure a new home will spring up, but in the meantime, on Friday September 1st 2017, I visited the multi-room venue Union for some good old-fashioned Satanic black metal. August 31st 2017, The Viper Room, West Hollywood CA: Vol. 10 of our series of Metal Assault Night events at The Viper Room took place on Thursday August 31st, and presented what we thought was an epic four-band lineup of Sirion, Soulera, Sorizon and Heavy Justice (all the Ss are just a coincidence). All the bands played great sets in front of a sizable turnout, and it was by all means an enjoyable event for all involved. Photographer Steven Benito was in attendance to capture some stills for us. August 30th 2017, The Observatory OC (Constellation Room), Santa Ana CA: As part of the series of Affliction Metal Night events organized by Jose Mangin of Sirius XM and held at the Constellation Room inside the Observatory Orange County in Santa Ana, metal greats Prong performed on Wednesday August 30th, with support acts Huntress, The Mendenhall Experiment and Thunder Gut. August 27th 2017, The Parish at House Of Blues, Anaheim CA: Shortly after the release of his latest solo album ‘Wall Of Sound’, guitarist extraordinaire Marty Friedman embarked on a North American headline tour, bringing not only his own talents to stages across the continent but also showcasing an excellent and highly dynamic group of musicians in his solo band. Plus, any Marty Friedman tour can be expected to present great support acts, and this was no different, with Scale The Summit and The Fine Constant also on the bill to make it a full evening of all-instrumental music. Towards its very end, the tour arrived in Anaheim for a show at the Parish Room, the smaller room inside the new House Of Blues. In this new, unfamiliar setting, attendees were treated to a night they will not forget any time soon.
