Best Albums Of 2017

By Andrew Bansal

Once more round the sun we have traversed, as another year is about to end, and with that it’s time to look back at what 2017 has offered to the world of heavy music. Countless albums were released, some forgettable, some disappointing, some downright laughably bad. But as is the case every year, there were many great ones that stood out, with some longstanding bands proving they still have the creative fire burning within, while younger, newer bands also stood up to be counted. Without further ado, here are my picks for the best albums of 2017. Continue reading “Best Albums Of 2017”

December 7th 2017, The Viper Room, West Hollywood CA: Last Thursday we hosted an event at the Viper Room which featured Up The Irons, Systematic Chaos and Trendkill Revolution (tributes to Iron Maiden, Dream Theater and Pantera respectively), plus original opening act Blaze The Thunder. Through the 44 Metal Assault events that have taken place so far, we haven’t booked a whole lot of tribute bands, but we try to do something different every show, and this was our big tribute-themed night. To say that it was a good time for all involved, would be an understatement. All the bands ruled, and made for a fun Thursday evening on the ol’ Sunset Strip! In case you weren’t there, our man Maurice Nunez took these killer photos for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy them below: Continue reading “Photo Gallery: Up The Irons, Systematic Chaos, Trendkill Revolution & Blaze The Thunder @ The Viper Room”

Album Review: Witchery – I Am Legion

By Francisco Zamudio

Breaking through two decades is not an easy task by any means for any band. We wish some would cash in their check and get lost, versus those short-lived great bands that only put out a couple of albums every handful of years and are never heard from again. Then you have some that had spread their seed over time, leaving an impression that needs to be filled. The whole time not realizing how much your fans are craving your unique sound, and a sound you helped develop since the late ’90s. And since then, one of the lesser known groups (I feel), Witchery have helped carve and pushed their way through with a blackened sound bleeding over the thrash and speed metal style. All while maintaining their sound, they have still evolved with the times and nearly managed to keep its lineup intact. Witchery’s longstanding trinity consists of bassist Sharlee D’Angelo, guitarists Rikard Rimfält and Jensen. Now they return with sophomores Angus Norder on vocals and Chris Barkensjö on drums. And in doing so, breaking tradition of releasing an album every handful of years, having just released the year-old ‘In His Infernal Majesty’s Service’, Witchery havenow  unleashed only their 7th full-length album to date, ‘I Am Legion’. Photo Gallery: An Endless Sporadic, Aeonic Impulse & House Of Rabbits @ The Viper Room

November 29th 2017, The Viper Room, West Hollywood CA: Last Wednesday, we had the privilege of putting on a prog-themed night, headlined by Los Angeles’ own instrumental cult heroes An Endless Sporadic, playing their first LA show since 2013, and supported by one of our favorite prog locals Aeonic Impulse, and the ever-eccentric House Of Rabbits. On a night when LA also played host to bands like Guns N’ Roses, Trivium and Arch Enemy, our all-local-band prog night was completely packed, and all three bands played such splendid sets, it is hard to put in words. So, we’ll leave you with not one but two pictorial perspectives, by Maurice Nunez and C. Jones.
