Before you proceed, catch up with Part 1 and Part 2.

Day 21 (9/29): Country & BBQ

Picking up from where I ended Part 2, we arrived at Sokol Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska on 9/29. While setting up merch, I heard a country song about this dude being drunk on an airplane on the local radio which was being played on the venue’s PA, and just in case I didn’t know I was in Omaha, this radio station’s playlist sure made me aware of it, as did the great and affordable local BBQ dinner I had. A few hours later, this 1500-capacity hall was packed with metalheads. It always amazes me whenever I visit these places that I didn’t imagine having a metal fan-base, and these people come out of the woodwork to fill such venues and sing along to every song played on stage by the band they come to see. This was once again a dominantly Sabaton-centric crowd. The Sabaton singer wasn’t at his best and sounded like he was sick, which their fans obviously didn’t notice or care about. But based on what I heard firsthand from some Trivium first-timers who visited my merch booth, Trivium comes across as an undeniably impressive live band, regardless of whether you’re a fan of their albums or not, and Matt Heafy’s frontmanship is exemplary. I was told he wasn’t doing as much of his harsh/growling vocals in recent years, but is certainly back to delivering both variants of his vocals on this tour and any singer that can switch between the two has to be commended for his/her talent. I’m fortunate enough to be able to appreciate not one but two such vocalists on this tour, Matt Heafy and Jill Janus. Trivium the live band is also boosted by strong, catchy guitar harmonies and solid rhythm section and great backing clean and harsh vocals, and the fact that they don’t use backing tracks makes me respect them even more. The Iron Maiden influence is very clear in their music and artwork, and may be I’m not one of the cool kids after all, because as opposed to the first show of the tour I now find myself liking this supposedly mainstream metal band. Trivium’s brand of Maiden-inspired modern American metal is quite alright in my book, and unlike the main support act’s 60-minute set, I’m more than fine watching and listening to Trivium’s 80-minute set every night.

Soundcheck in Minneapolis

Day 22 (9/30): Chaos In Mill City

Next up was Minneapolis, always an important show of any tour, with bigger crowds and more press coverage than other cities. Mill City Nights was a sold-out affair. Luis had switched to controlling the Huntress mix using his iPad instead of the house mixing board, and Omaha was the first show with the new system. As with anything sound-related at these shows, it takes at least one attempt to get things perfectly dialed in, and working through the kinks in Omaha, the mix was already far superior in Minneapolis and it only got better through each show after. In most aspects, this proved to be a great venue, but not where it mattered most for me, i.e. the merch area. There was a serious lack of space for the merch lines, and it quickly became a traffic jam of people trying to buy merch with those that were just trying to get a higher vantage point to watch the show. Things got even worse when Huntress came out for the meet-n-greet, as they do every show after Sabaton’s set. It was a miracle for anyone to have even reached and met the band, such was the human congestion. But later, while I was still dealing with a difficult night, the guys went to a karaoke bar across the street and sang Madonna songs with some of the Sabaton dudes, from what I’m told. The Huntress tour bus after-party carried on for a while but in contrast, I hit the bed in my bunk as soon as I was done loading out my boxes. Amidst all the chaos, the highlight of my night was that one blind Huntress fan not only attending and enjoying the show but also coming up to me and buying merch. This has happened on a couple of other occasions on this tour. Such is the power of music. On the flip side, a good friend and fellow journalist cursed me for “ruining” Sabaton for him by telling him that they use a ton of backing tracks. Isn’t the truth painful?

Jill’s drumhead artwork has been turning some heads

Day 23 (10/01): My Heroes

It was nice to get away from the big show for a bit, with our next show being a headline gig at Top Fuel Saloon in middle-of-nowhere rural Illinois, a town called Braidwood. The bar gigs are easier for me in terms of the workload and allow me more time to interact with the locals. Plus, the enticing prospect of not sitting through 60 minutes of Sabaton for once already had me in high spirits. Completely opposite to the on-the-dot schedules and the fixed daily routine of the Trivium shows, these small headline shows throw in an element of unpredictability, which is what rock n’ roll is all about. By this I not only mean load-in/soundcheck/set times, but also the nature and quality of the local talent that opens for Huntress. This particular gig treated me to an opener that played butt rock covers, including ‘My Hero’ by one of my least favorite band on the planet, Foo Fighters, a rendition so splendid that it made me want to blow my brains out. Again, such is the power of music. I survived that but they almost had me by following up this cover with their version of Chevelle’s ‘The Red’. There was also that one extremely drunk person that stumbled upon and almost fell over my entire merch table with a tall can of beer in each hand and was ejected from the bar. All sarcasm aside, it was a fun night for all of us, the band got to play their full 75-minute set on a more-than-decent stage, people tipped me generously, the staff was super-friendly, and the owner got us hammered on multiple shots after the show.

Eric and Eli in a drunken conversation

Day 24 & 25 (10/02 & 10/03): Doobies & Wings

We had a very short drive to Peoria for the next show which wasn’t until October 4th. This was far from ideal, and being stationary and stuck in one spot on dead off-days is what I hate most about tour life. My ideal itinerary would have absolutely no off-days, specially when you have a singer like Jill who takes such great care of her health and voice that she doesn’t need off-days. She should write books on how to sing on tour, but may be she should do that after she retires, because you don’t want to give away your trade secrets while you’re still in business. Anyway, here we were, in Illinois with nothing to do for two days. Aside from camping the bus in Walmart parking lots and not listening to Sabaton, we got stoned and ate a ton of chicken wings for dinner on both nights. This marks the first time I’ve ever had wings for two consecutive dinners. We also indulged in some mundane activities like going to the mall. I bought a heather navy ‘Ride The Lightning’ Metallica shirt at a Kohl’s and I’m now a poser.

Eli on a typical off-day

Day 26 (10/04): In The Limelight

The Limelight Eventplex in Peoria looks like a warehouse from the outside but is a lovely venue on the inside. The show though was mostly uneventful, not drawing as great of a turnout as what’s become the norm for this tour. But as usual, people were buying Jill’s jewelry at the merch table, which I talked about in the previous blog installment but one thing I’ve noticed more and more is couples coming up to browse the display and chicks asking their dudes to buy them necklaces. A lot of the times the dudes clearly seem unwilling, but do it anyway. The jewelry comes at a price but the contrast of the looks on the faces is priceless. Another aspect of doing merch for Huntress is coming across so many seriously dedicated superfans, the kind of dedication I’ve very rarely seen when working for other bands. In my own opinion, some of these people get too obsessive and inconsiderate as they don’t want to stop talking to Jill and the guys even when there’s a line of others waiting behind them, but this band is still nice to all fans and I commend them for that. On the positive side, superfans bring us lots of presents including pickles, personal drawings for (and of) Jill, iHop gift cards, snacks, drinks, fruit and much more. Some of them bring weed too. More of that would be nice indeed and we would vey much welcome it. So if you feel like fulfilling our need for weed, come and talk to me at the merch table.

Read more on Page 2

We need weed

Day 27 (10/05): “A Dollar Is What I Need”

We had another long drive all the way to Dallas, Texas, and passed through Tulsa, Oklahoma with a lot of time on our hands. So we hit the Hard Rock Casino and sat on the slot machines for a while. Eric was highly excited upon seeing a Dungeons & Dragons machine, but was disappointed when it ate up his money very quickly and moved to a different machine which got stuck after he inserted a dollar. He called the staff and waited till they fixed it, and eventually got his dollar back after about 30 minutes. In short, Eric had a very difficult time at this casino but still walked away with 50 bucks of loot. We were told stores can’t sell alcohol legally past 9 PM in this area, but Eli and I went to the Walmart we were parked outside of in a seemingly hopeless quest to buy beer at 1:48 AM, and surprisingly returned successful. Tulsa rules, and you’ll read me saying this again before the end of this installment.

Eric in his happy place

“I need a dollar dollar, a dollar is what I need”

Day 28 (10/06): Downsizing In Dallas

We arrived in Dallas, at the Gas Monkey Bar & Grill, not the much bigger Gas Monkey Live as I’d initially thought. Halestorm and Lita Ford were playing that venue on the same night instead. I guess that duo is bigger than Trivium, Sabaton and Huntress combined, at least in Dallas, but it has to be said that the outdoor GMBG stage seemed far too small for our show. It was packed like sardines. Trivium’s drumkit and stage props are always set up first and are not allowed to be moved off stage at any point, understandably so, as they are the actual headliners of this tour after all. But even on a tiny stage like this, Sabaton’s crew insisted on leaving their drum kit on stage too, leaving Huntress very little room to even stand on that stage, leave alone move around. But having learnt to maintain her balance on monitors in 3-inch heels from her childhood days, Jill makes the most of any and every stage, as does the rest of the band, and everyone rocks out hard even when they can’t move around. Blake the gentle giant is blessed with natural stage presence, Eli is always ultra-energetic, and Eric in particular adds a lot to the band’s energy level and persona. I can’t really imagine there being a better bassist for this band. Meanwhile Tyler had to deal with placing his kit to the very corner of the stage, far from ideal for him or the band, but they all came up trumps and from where I was, sounded the loudest of the three bands. I approach my job at merch with the seriousness and professionalism it deserves and would work for almost any band, but it makes me like what I do and motivates me to constantly strive to do better when said band is impressing me more and more every night. I’ve been fortunate to work for highly impressive bands before, and Huntress is definitely an emphatic addition to the list. After this show, Trivium drummer Paul Wandtke came to our bus and smoked a doobie with us while he revealed that he not only looks like Kurt Cobain but in fact plays guitar and sings in a Nirvana tribute band.

Eli getting punished in Houston

Day 29 (10/07): Nothing Is Free

Next was Houston, a gig at Scout Bar, another surprisingly small-sized venue for the magnitude of this lineup, but logistically better to deal with than the one in Dallas. This is the show where I started implanting my new rule, introducing a $10 minimum purchase at the merch table to be able to meet Huntress. People were definitely responding to it, the sales numbers reflected it, and the line for the meet-n-greet was also longer than usual. With Trivium charging $30 for their after-show meet-n-greets every night on this tour (except festival appearances), this was an easy step for me to get approved by their merch guy. We’ve had to match their shirt price of $25 but we’d have probably sold for that price anyway, and the whole Trivium crew including their merch department has been extremely nice to us. They haven’t imposed any restrictions on me in terms of number of shirt designs or other items, which has made life easier. The $10 minimum is just a new angle to push merch sales from my behalf, and to lessen some of the burden of competing with bands like Sabaton and Trivium when it comes to selling merch. Aside from the new meet-n-greet rule, I also added other deals and bundles through the next few shows, including handing out a free cookie with any purchase in Poughkeepsie, New York. In reality, nothing is free (including items the band was giving out for free on previous tours). And even though I accept requests for change of size or design, there are absolutely no refunds. “Why and how has everything at your merch table become a heartless, soulless, capitalistic endeavor?” asked Eric, perhaps rightly so, having not seen this side of me on the Gygax tour. My guess is that the true Indian in me is finally taking over my soul while the laid-back California metalhead hippie still resides in the body.

Day 30 (10/08): “You Killed It On Guitar!”

From Texas, back we went to Tulsa, Oklahoma, this time for a gig at Cain’s Ballroom. This place was massive, but so was the crowd. Trust me, Tulsa rules, and your entire perception of this town would change once you experience a metal show and the night life here. It’s extremely friendly and lively, and this is the kind of place I tend to remember more than others. Before the gig, while I was walking back from my dinner, I crossed paths with the entire Sabaton band, and the drummer asked me, “Caribbean or Italian?” I answered Italian. This is the longest conversation I’ve had with any member of Sabaton on this tour till date, and it remains unclear whether or not they followed my advice on their dinner plans that evening in Tulsa. The show itself was awesome, and I thought this was one of the best Huntress sets so far. Did I ever mention that some people mistake me for Eli and congratulate me on how amazeballs awesome I was on the guitar? It happened a couple of times at this show. One person even asked me to autograph a Huntress CD, thinking I was him. I don’t see any resemblance between us aside from the obvious one, but I guess if you’re not very familiar with the band and are drunk/high enough, we look like twins. This could lead to some interesting adventures and I hope it happens more. Eli said he’s cool with me pretending to be him. All I have to do is perfect his Arnold Schwarzenegger voice imitations, and I’d like to think I’m getting there.

Day 32 (10/10): Monday Madness

Tulsa was truly a rager, and 1000 miles later, we were in Pittsburgh. I’ve always loved visiting Pittsburgh on tour, and the show at Stage AE was no different. Seeing people (mainly Sabaton fans) already lined up when we pulled into the back of the venue at around 1 PM made me realize how dedicated the fans have been to the two main bands throughout this tour, and how it has in turn benefitted Huntress, because reaching new audiences is the ultimate aim for any opening act on a tour this big, and it would be pointless if everyone was turning up after the opening act was already done playing. Thankfully, the venues are packed to near capacity every night, even as early as Huntress’ usual set start time of 7:30 PM. This show was amazing in every sense for all involved, and once again Huntress was the loudest and clearest band, and this was not just my opinion but also that of some of my friends who came in to the show mainly as Sabaton fans. It just goes to show that some things are best done old-school, such as live guitar and bass amplification. I had my pre-show meal at a place called Purgatory. The burger was good, but disappointingly enough, this joint isn’t in fact an Iron Maiden themed restaurant. I was recognized by a at the show as someone who “looked familiar”. As it turned out, I had stayed at her house on a previous tour. You know you’ve toured a lot when a person recognizes you as a previous one-time guest at their house and it takes you a minute to remember them.

Read more on Page 3

View from the Trivium drum kit at Stage AE in Pittsburgh

Preppin’ & Gygax reppin’ for the big night in NYC

Day 33 (10/11): Big City Lights

In stark contrast to Pittsburgh, New York City invariably stresses me out and I always dread it. All my fears were realized as soon as we arrived at Irving Plaza in Manhattan, not finding any parking for our bus, and then being subjected to TSA-level security checks that were, strangely enough, far stricter than what the general ticket holders had to go through. I didn’t have to deal with it as much as the band members because I was by my merch table all night, plus luckily I’m too fat to wear my belt at this point, so I didn’t have to take it off every time I went in. But the band was searched whenever they re-entered which got really ridiculous when they were loading out their gear straight after their set. The security staff strip-searched Eli at one point, which was not racist at all, right? But this was Jill’s hometown for ten years, she was definitely excited about the show and fulfilling a lifelong dream of playing Irving Plaza. The band delivered the goods on stage and she lived up to the occasion. Before (and after) the show I went to the famous Crocodile Lounge for their ‘free pizza with every drink’ speciality and it was great. Security hassles aside, this was probably the most positive NYC experience I’ve ever had.

Grainy Snapchat screenshot of Eli getting strip-searched at Irving Plaza in NYC

Day 34 & 35 (10/12 & 10/13): “Sorry mom & dad!”

After two high-profile shows, the off-date headline gig at Dingbatz in Clifton, New Jersey was a pleasant departure, and what could be more Jersey than Steve Zing being the in-house sound guy? The local talent here was far better than that in Braidwood IL or Spartanburg SC, and one band even played a good cover of Iron Maiden’s ’The Trooper’, which I thought would never happen after witnessing so many bad covers of that song through my travels. Back on the Trivium/Sabaton tour, the next destination was the Chance in Poughkeepsie, New York, a highly excellent B-market outing for Huntress, and I also thought Trivium’s set was their best of the entire tour thus far. In this relatively small room, the bands were sounding extra loud and I loved it. If you live anywhere within driving distance of the Chance, make it a point to attend as many shows here as you can. Jill’s mom and dad were at this show and there was a funny moment on stage when she apologized in advance for singing ‘I Want To Fuck You To Death’.

Tyler getting ready for Rock And Shock in Worcester

Day 36 (10/14): Throw-N-Go

Next was a festival gig at the prestigious Worcester Palladium. All three bands of our tour featured in the main stage lineup of Day 1 of Rock And Shock Festival 2016, amongst Carach Angren, Demolition Hammer, Kataklysm and Dope. Out of those bands, Dope was the only one that did not bore me, and Carach Angren bored me the most. Sorry guys, as I said before, I’m not one of the cool kids. It was a strange event with Huntress getting only a 20-minute set and going on as early as 5:30 PM, but considering that most attendees didn’t even see the band, I found myself surprisingly busy at merch throughout the long evening.

Day 37 (10/15): No Refunds!

Ending this highly eventful week of shows was a gig at Magic City Music Hall in Binghamton, New York, which is apparently the closest Huntress has ever come to passing through Jill’s actual hometown of Oneonta NY. None of us knew what to expect from this one, but we arrived at this venue which is massive enough to host a sold-out Iron Maiden concert, and even though the hall wasn’t packed by any means, it was still a lot of people for a show in this town, and the response from these metal-starving people was insane.
