‘Top 50 Albums Of 2013’ Countdown – #34: Carousel – Jeweler’s Daughter

By Andrew Bansal

Pittsburgh rock n’ roll quartet Carousel started out in 2010 and released their debut full-length album Jeweler’s Daughter via Tee Pee Records this year. In 2013, the world of hard rock and heavy metal has largely been filled with a plethora of dark, doom-laden music (also evident from the albums featured in this countdown so far). But amidst rock and metal bands busy exploring the darker sides of their musical expression, Carousel treats the genuine rock lover with a refreshing change of pace and mood. That being said, of course there are other bands pursuing the positive, upbeat variety of rock n’ roll, but Carousel seem to have hit the nail on its head and succeeded to a greater extent than most of their peers with their brand of musicianship. Boasting of excellently delivered clean vocals, scorching guitar melodies, riffs and solos, and a strong rhythm section, this album is Carousel’s glorious salute to the likes of Thin Lizzy, Motörhead and bands of that nature. There’s an abundance of revivalistic bands in existence today, but Carousel’s approach, although reminiscent of their idols and forefathers, doesn’t adopt a carbon-copy style and leaves enough room for the quartet to infuse their own individual touch to it. The album kicks off with the title track, hands down one of the most compelling tunes of the year, and simply never looks back or fades away. Jeweler’s Daughter stands strong as one of the finest albums of this year, and if you’re into fun-filled rock n’ roll with an element of sleaze, you might find this album to be your calling.
