BAPTISTS: Baptists (Album Review)

Release Date: March 15th, 2011 Review Date: March 23rd, 2011 Record Label: Southern Lord My rating:
With a roster that boasts of names like Saint Vitus, Black Breath, Nails, Weedeater, Corrosion Of Conformity and Pentagram, the Southern Lord label has always introduced us to some unrelenting, ear-shattering music. As soon as they placed their trust in Vancouver hardcore outfit Baptists, I knew that there must have been something worthwhile in that band's music to have caught Southern Lord's attention. As a result, the band just released their self-titled debut 7-inch single, a crushing 12-minute attack. It opens with "Good Parenting", an unforgivingly chaotic way to introduce the band to the world of listeners. While this track would grab you by the throat, "Farmed" will certainly flatten you with its furious beginning. The second half of this song slows it to a down-tempo tune, giving you a chance to recover from the punishing music thus far. "Bachelor Degree Burn", besides having a great title, remains slow and heavy while it gradually builds up to the final track, "Life Poser". It's very interesting in the sense that it's easily the most guitar-driven track on this EP, with the guitar sound very much in the foreground. But it ends out with the same raw brutality that encompasses this album as a whole. The production here is definitely raw, which is exactly what suits their style of music. If it were to be any more polished, the music would have lost some of its impact. This is a great taste of things to come from Baptists in the foreseeable future, and fans of bands like Trap Them, Neurosis, Agnostic Front and D.R.I. should find this to be well worth their money. One of the most earsplitting EP releases to have come out in recent times. TweetCheck out "Good Parenting" using our music player below! | ||||||||||||||
