Phone interview with Jasun Tipton from CYNTHESIS
By Kate Wilcox
April 8th 2011, Hawaiian Ocean View, Hawaii: The music of Cynthesis is created by musicians who love progressive, cinematic rock/metal music. In late 2007, Jasun began writing material for Cynthesis. As the music developed Jasun could only imagine one vocalist to really connect to the material. ' I've always been a fan of Erik's vocals and I knew his lyic writing would be a perfect match for the material.' explains Jasun. After one phone call both Jasun and Erik were very excited to work together again.
The final piece of the puzzle was to find an amazing drummer. Jasun asked Troy what drummer he would like to work with. Without any hesistation Troy said ,'Sean Flanegan is the guy'. Sean's been a long time friend and played drums on Jasun's 2000 instrumental release, Night's Pulse. Sean is best know for his amazing work with the Progressive Rock band, Enchant (Blink of an eye & Tug of War).
I had the great opportunity to talk with Jasun about their new album, getting back with old friends and future plans for Cynthesis!
Kate: Hey Jasun, thanks for taking the time to do the interview, how are you?
Jasun: Awesome, doing great! Just wanted to say thank you for the promotion you've been giving us. Feedback on the album has been awesome. Troy's recovering nicely, been doing physical therapy and been able to play about up to five minutes a day which is huge!
Kate: Can you give us some background of how Cynthesis came together?
Jasun: When it came to the idea of the album, I knew there was only one vocalist that we wanted and that was Erik. There's just something about his vocals, they are amazing. It's funny, I ran into him at a Heaven And Hell concert. He was actually in the same row as I was and it was just like old times, we gave each other a big hug and talked and when I asked him if he'd be on the album, he said absolutely. Same with Sean Flanegan, we've been good friends with him and when I asked Troy who he wanted as far as drummers go, Sean's name was the first that came up. It really felt like it was meant to be. It's really cool when things like that fall into place.
Kate: What should fans expect from "DeEvolution"?
Jasun: We wanted it to be very melodic and spacey. It has a lot of progressive rock elements but has a metal influence as well. We wanted to it to be completely different from Zero Hour, I know a lot of fans are expecting that but we wanted it to be completely different and it's awesome. It's very cinematic, we wanted to flow like a score for a movie which we could do with a concept album like this.
Kate: What is the concept behind this album? And what were some influences to come up with this concept?
Jasun: Ya know, Erik is a great lyricist and he came with the idea for this story. It's mainly about how basically how this country is being run by greedy and corrupt politicians and being pulled down. But it touches on a lot of other things as well. This is a great country but it's being run by politicians that really don't know what they're doing. A lot of people want to get back to the basics but unfortunately I don't think we know how to do that right now and that is one of the main concepts on this album.
Kate: I completely agree, the government has been corrupt for so long, I don't think they can get back to the basics.
Jasun: Exactly, and it's sad because this is a great country and there are a lot of great people in this country that are just lost.
Kate: Who have been your influences over the years?
Jasun: Huge Pink Floyd fan, which you can probably tell from this album (laughs). All those bands from the early days, Dio, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, always have been a huge Rainbow fan.
Kate: What are some of your plans after the album's released?
Jasun: Definitely want to tour once Troy gets better but we can't do that right so we're actually thinking of the next album "ReEvolution", a continuation of this one. But in the meantime just want to build up "DeEvolution" and just wanted to say thank you for doing this again. Since we can't tour, it's interview and reviews like these that help promote and get the word out.
Kate: Absolutely, both I and Metal Assault want to help spread the word about you and this great album!
Jasun: Thank you!
Kate: Any words for your fans out there?
Jasun: Just wanted to say thank everyone for the support and all the kind words for Troy. Hope everyone likes the album, hopefully we'll see you on tour one day soon. Keep your ears peeled for the next album in the works as well!
Kate: Thank you again Jasun for taking the time to do this interview, I really appreciate it!
Jasun: Thank you and Aloha!
