In-person interview with Rob Cavestany from DEATH ANGEL
By Aniruddh "Andrew" Bansal
March 5th 2011, Scion Rock Fest, Pomona CA
Andrew: Rob, it is great to have you on Metal Assault.
Rob: Thank you!
Andrew: What did it feel like, playing tonight's Scion Rock Fest? It's a such a great festival and it finally came to California.
Rob: Oh, it was awesome man. It's the third Scion event we have done, so we are kind of comfy with the Scion people by now. It's just amazing, and a great thing that they are doing by supporting the scene in a great way. It was fun tonight.
Andrew: It kind of worked out well for you tonight. It was a shortish set but it was intense because there was no talking and just playing.
Rob: Yeah it was an hour. Our headline set is definitely much longer, but an hour is still a pretty good amount of time. You can get some rocking in an hour. So it was alright.
Andrew: How would you recap the headline tour you just finished? It must have been a lot of fun. I myself was at four of those shows.
Rob: Oh man, it was really a lot of fun. I mean, people came out and they raged hard. We hoped for that because you never really know what to expect when you're doing a headline tour like that, how people are going to react, and who's going to show up, but it was good man. Really, really good. We've very satisfied with that tour.
Andrew: The new songs are sounding killer, specially your backing vocals on "Claws In So Deep" and "Opponents At Sides". So, did you actually have to practice a lot to be able to pull it off live?
Rob: Well, yeah. But we practice a lot anyway. It's just standard procedure for us. But it was fun practicing that stuff, definitely.
Andrew: One of the new songs that you did not play on that tour is "Volcanic". I love that song and cannot even get it out of my head. Is there any chance you would play it next time?
Rob: Aw, thanks man. May be we will. It's always up in the air because we can only do so many songs within our set. So we'll flip it around the next time and it'll surely get played live at some point.
Andrew: That's great to hear. Last time I was talking to Ted about the acoustic segment of "Claws In So Deep". Can we expect to see Rodrigo and Gabriela perform that with you on stage?
Rob: Yeah they came to our show in Hollywood and were there to watch us, but who knows. That would be amazing, and we wouldn't kick them off stage if they want to jam with us (laughs).
Andrew: Coming back to this festival, did you check out any of these bands playing, or did you just come here to do only your thing?
Rob: I meant to, but I ended up missing two shuttles. I went to take a piss and by the time I came back, the fucking shuttle was gone, and it happened twice. So no, I got here like half an hour before our set. But I saw some of Municipal Waste's set, so that was cool. They are jamming, they are fun!
Andrew: At the Slim's show, you had Lazarus A.D. and Bonded By Blood on stage playing "Thrashers" with you. That was an amazing moment. What did you think of those bands on the tour?
Rob: They're just awesome. Those guys have a lot of energy and a lot of enthusiasm for what they are doing, which is what it takes when you're driving yourself around the United States in your own vehicle. It's rough and we know that because we've been there many times before. So I give those guys a lot of credit. They jam hard man. They are two of the good bands out there, for sure.
Andrew: Do you have any favorite song from "Relentless Retribution", something you love playing on stage?
Rob: That's a tough one. I can't pick, that's like saying which is your favorite kid. So I don't know, it depends from night to night. I always get a kick out of playing "Claws In So Deep". That song is an epic from the new album. "Opponents At Sides" is kind of challenging to play live so that's really good. But I mean, I love all the songs we play off of our new album live. They're all fun.
