Phone interview with "Dixie" Dave Collins from WEEDEATER

By Aniruddh "Andrew" Bansal

January 28th 2011, Los Angeles CA

Andrew: Your new album is finally ready for release, after going through a couple of delays. Do you think it'll be worth the wait for everybody?
Dixie: I hope so. It's worth the wait for me. We went through a lot of shit last year, but we've been together for a long time, the same three members in the band for 16 years now. So we're very happy with it.

Andrew: You had some injuries to yourself last year, including losing your big toe. How is it now? Are you fully recovered from all of that?
Dixie: Oh yeah, I'll be fine. I still have nine and a half toes left, so I'll be fine. It happened last year, and it is what it is, but we'll persevere and keep moving forward.

Andrew: When I listen to the album, I feel that you've taken a new approach in terms of the music. Do you agree?
Dixie: Yeah, we have a very good time together playing music, regardless of what it is. Different times in people's lives kind of dictate what happens. Some of the stuff was written when I had my accident and was laying around. I'm not very good by myself by all accounts, so I had to do something. So between all of that I think I came up with some weird shit. It's all a part of where we're striving to get to, so whether people like it or not, I really don't give a shit. I like it.

Andrew: Right, but despite that, do you think it'll be appreciated by all of your fans?
Dixie: Well, I hope so, but I'm sure it'll be appreciated by our friends and that's what matters to me.

Andrew: Jason .. The Dragon. Is there a story behind that name?
Dixie: Oh yeah, I've been keeping that around for a long time as a concept, an idea to do a record that is based on one person's life. I'll explain it to people I guess one by one as I run into them. The chronicles of one big slosh from beginning to end, and his name is Jason.

Andrew: While we are on the subject of names, how did you arrive at the name Weedeater when the band started?
Dixie: That was 17 years ago. We didn't have a name for the band. My dog ate my weed, and I called her a little fucking weedeater. Our drummer thought it was a great name for the band.

Andrew: One of the other things that I read about you was that you almost died in your Halloween costume. How did that happen?
Dixie: It was a miscalculation on my part. I was kind of fucked up and broke, and on Halloween I decided I was going to the best dive bar in the world in my opinion, Reggie's 42nd Street Tavern, here in North Carolina. I dressed up as a ninja scuba assassin and wore a dry suit that had a 4 mm slit, and I had a hood on. Basically I was drinking burgundy for the whole day and almost got dehydrated. But I was fine by the end of the next day.

Andrew: You have a tour coming up, which also includes SXSW. How do you feel about playing that festival?
Dixie: SXSW has been done probably like 25 times between Buzzoven and Weedeater, out of which I've done it at least 20 times. Austin is an awesome fucking place. It's a place in Texas that everyone should visit.

Andrew: What do you think about playing in LA, in general? You were here with Down and The Melvins in 2009.
Dixie: The whole tour with them was awesome. Everyone was treating us very good and we had a very good time. We loved touring with those guys and the LA shows were good. All the California shows were good, and in fact all shows on the tour were good. Sometimes LA can be rude for us when we are booked in different areas, and we don't know where the fuck we are in a huge city. As far as playing-wise goes, you can end up in the wrong part of town and it can take hours to get to where you need to be. So it's always been a struggle for us whenever we've been in that part, you know. We've had trouble playing in Weedeater as well as Buzzoven, but we've also had some really great shows here.

Andrew: When you started out as Weedeater, what was it like the first ever time you took the stage?
Dixie: The very first show we played anywhere was obviously right here in Wilmington, NC in the Cape Fear area. We had a lot of friends and family here, so it was a lot of fun actually.

Andrew: On this tour coming up, considering the number of injuries you've had recently, do you think you'll be more cautious in going about your general business?
Dixie: No, no (laughs).

Andrew: That's the answer I expected.
Dixie: Yeah, the more body parts you lose, the less you have left to lose. We'll be fine.

Andrew: If you hadn't played in either Buzzoven or Weedeater, is there something else you've really loved doing that you would be doing right now?
Dixie: I really like to drink burgundy, and smoke weed.
